Heads-up: this QR is static
Once printed, you can’t change where it points. If you might update the destination later (menu changes, campaign switches, event moves), use a dynamic QR — same code, editable target.
See dynamic QR pricing →Static vs dynamic QR codes — pick what you actually need
Static (this tool)
Best when
- The destination will never change (contact card, WiFi password, permanent URL)
- You don’t need scan analytics
- Print run is small enough that reprinting isn’t a big deal
Cost: $0. Right here.
Dynamic (our paid product)
Best when
- Destination might change (menu, campaign, event page, promo link)
- You want scan counts, geography, device breakdown
- Print run is expensive (posters, signage, business cards at scale)
Cost: from $19/mo. See pricing →
What each content type does
| Type | What the phone does when scanned | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| URL | Opens the link in the default browser. | Landing pages, links, downloads. |
| Text | Displays the text; user can copy it. | Coupon codes, serial numbers, notes. |
| WiFi | Prompts to auto-join the network. | Coffee shops, Airbnbs, offices. |
| vCard | Prompts to save the contact. | Business cards, event badges. |
| Opens mail app with a pre-filled draft. | RSVPs, inquiries, feedback. | |
| Phone | Dials the number. | Emergency contacts, tap-to-call. |
| SMS | Opens SMS with a pre-filled message. | Opt-ins, campaign responses. |
QR code best practices
- Test-scan before printing at scale. Print one, scan from 2 feet with two different phones. Cheap ink and dim lighting kill low-contrast QRs.
- Keep contrast high. Dark dots on light background is the safest. Similar shades (pastel on pastel, gray on gray) often fail.
- Don’t print smaller than 1 inch. At smaller sizes, most phone cameras — especially older Androids — start to fail.
- Leave quiet zone. Keep at least 4 dots of blank margin around the QR. Text or images too close to the pattern break the scan.
- SVG for print, PNG for screen. SVG scales to any size without pixelation. PNG is fine for screens and small print runs.
Frequently asked questions
Is this QR code generator really free?▾
Yes. No signup, no watermark, no email required, no daily limit on the generator itself. The QRs are yours to use commercially or personally. The optional dynamic QR product ($ per month) is a separate paid feature for when you need to change the destination after printing.
What's the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?▾
A static QR encodes the destination directly — the pattern IS the URL. Once printed, changing the URL means reprinting everything. A dynamic QR encodes a short redirect URL that you own; you can update where it points anytime without changing the printed QR. Static is free (this tool). Dynamic requires an account so we can serve the redirect.
What content types can I encode in a QR code?▾
This tool supports the seven most common: URLs, plain text, WiFi credentials (auto-join), vCards (contact save), email (pre-filled), phone (dial), and SMS (pre-filled text). Under the hood a QR can encode any text up to ~2,000 characters, but scanner apps handle those seven formats natively.
What size should I download my QR code?▾
For screen (email, social): PNG at any size — 500×500 or higher. For print: SVG if your design tool supports it (Illustrator, Figma, Canva) — it scales to any physical size without pixelation. For direct printing without editing: PNG at 1000×1000 will print sharp up to about A4.
Do custom colors affect scannability?▾
Contrast is what matters. Dark dots on a light background always work. Light dots on a dark background works too. Similar shades (e.g. gray on gray, pastel on pastel) may not scan reliably — especially on older phone cameras or in dim light. Always test-scan before printing.
Is my data sent to your servers?▾
No. Everything happens on your device — the URL, WiFi password, or contact info you enter is never sent to us or stored anywhere. Close the tab and it's gone.
